Why an air to water heat pump

The same hot water, a fraction of the power

An air to water heat pump captures warmth from the outside air and transfers it into your hot water cylinder or hydronic radiator network. Instead of running an electric element all day, it uses the surrounding air to do the heavy lifting, which brings daily running costs right down. It works well for most Wellington homes, but layout and outdoor airflow matter. If your site is not right for one, we will tell you straight away.

Up to 70% lower running costs

Against a standard electric cylinder, on the same household demand.

Works year-round

Wellington rarely gets cold enough to trouble a well-specified unit, and there is an internal backup heating element for the days it does.

Quieter than expected

Modern units run at around 38 to 45 decibels, similar to a kitchen fridge. Outdoor placement still matters, so we assess your site before quoting.

Flexible setups for tight spaces

If your current cylinder is in a central cupboard with no outdoor space nearby, we do not have to force an all-in-one tank outside. We can install a split system, with the outdoor unit up to 8 metres away in a better spot for airflow, connected to your indoor cylinder.

Financing your upgrade with a bank green loan

Pay off your upgrade at 0% to 1% interest

ANZ, ASB, BNZ and Westpac offer low-interest or interest-free home loan top-ups to help NZ homeowners fund energy-efficient upgrades, including air to water heat pump cylinders and hydronic heating systems. We can provide detailed, itemised quotes designed to meet your bank's documentation requirements for quick loan approval.

What we offer

Four kinds of hot water work

Repair first where repair makes sense. We only recommend a new cylinder if it is genuinely the cheaper answer.

Heat pump systems

Quoted or hourly

Supply and installation of air to water heat pump hot water systems, sized to the household rather than to the biggest unit we can sell you.

Electric cylinders

Quoted or hourly

Supply, installation and servicing of standard electric cylinders, including like-for-like replacements.

Upgrades and replacements

Quoted or hourly

Relocations, upsizing, gas conversions and bringing older pipework up to standard as part of the swap.

Servicing and maintenance

Quoted or hourly

Elements, thermostats, valves, tempering valves and gas servicing. Most no-hot-water calls are one of these, not the cylinder.

Before you replace

Three things worth checking first

How old is it?

Under about ten years old and a repair is usually worth it. Past fifteen, or leaking from the tank itself, replacing is cheaper over time.

Is it the cylinder at all?

No hot water is often an element, a thermostat or a tempering valve. All far cheaper than a cylinder, and all worth ruling out first.

Where will it live?

A heat pump unit needs airflow. If the current cylinder is in a cupboard with none, that changes what we recommend.

What it costs

FAQs

Hot water questions we get asked most

How long does a hot water cylinder replacement take?

Most straightforward swaps are done the same day, so you have hot water that evening. If your job involves relocating the cylinder, upsizing, or bringing older pipework up to standard, we set out the timeline upfront during our site quote.

Should I repair or replace my hot water cylinder?

Under about ten years old and it is usually worth repairing. Past fifteen years, or if it is leaking from the tank itself, replacing is the cheaper option over time. We tell you which one we would do.

Is a heat pump system worth it for a small household?

Often, but not always. The saving scales with how much hot water you use, so a one or two person household takes longer to pay back the higher install cost. We will give you the honest arithmetic for your usage.

Do you service systems you did not install?

Yes. Elements, thermostats, valves and general servicing on any brand, whoever fitted it.

Do I need a plumber or an electrician for no hot water?

Call a plumber first. Sudden hot water problems are often caused by valve failures, low water pressure or cylinder leaks, which we fix on the spot. If our testing shows the problem is a blown heating element or a thermostat fault, we can arrange for an electrician to swap it quickly.
